The Dead Student

The Dead Student follows a young man set on avenging his uncle no matter the conseuencesTimothy Warner a PhD student who goes by the nickname “Moth” wakes up on his ninety ninth day of sobriety with an intense craving for drink He asks his uncle Ed a former alcoholic and now successful psychiatrist to meet him at an A. There s something surreal about The Dead Student I m not sure it s meant to come across that way but it felt to me as though the story floats somewhere above reality Timothy who goes by the name Moth is a recovering alcoholic graduate student His uncle who is a psychiatrist and recovering alcoholic and Moth s biggest champion appears to have committed suicide but Moth is convinced that his uncle was murdered Moth enlists an ex girlfriend who goes by the name Andy Candy and a recovering cocaine addict DA Susan Terry to help him figure out what s going on In parallel we see things from the killer s point of view this is not a spoiler since it is uickly apparent that this was in fact a murder What unfolds is a game of cat and mouse although it s not always clear who is the mouse and who is the cat What makes it surreal is that while the story mostly takes place in Miami there s an unreal sense that the only people around are the people involved in the plot and the only reality for these people is the chase That is with the exception of all the nameless people at Moth and Susan s AA meetings who are given a collective Greek chorus like voice from time to time These elements together give the story a disembodied stage play feel like there s only light shining on the immediate action and everything else around is cloaked in obscurity At times it all felt really clever and at times it felt like a thin plot with little character development Final verdict It kept me reading because I wanted to know what happened at the end which end is uite odd and morally fraught but I had a niggling feeling of dissatisfaction throughout because it felt like here were the seeds of a clever concept with which the author could have done much Or maybe I m just making this too complicated and what I read was a wannabe screenplay thinly disguised as a novel Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an opportunity to read an advance copy

E thinks he can trust Andrea Martine an ex girlfriend he has not spoken to in yearsEach battling their inner demons Moth and Andy travel into dark unfamiliar territory intent on finding out the truth about Ed’s death and circling ever closer to a devious mind that will flinch at nothing to achieve his own goal of reveng. Generally likable but ultimately disappointing tale from Katzenbach about an alcoholic grad student who begins to investigate the apparent suicide of his uncle as a murder He teams up with his ex girlfriend and a coke addicted prosecutor on the trail of a man with a grudge against those he believes did him wrong in medical school The story starts off well but drags for a while and never really picks its steam back up Doesn t have the same gritty edge that Katzenbach fans are used to The climactic showdown is underwhelming with some silly dialogue between the two sides although the epilogue does contain a satisfying resolution My least favorite Katzenbach novel Not bad but not great either 25 stars

Read for the 2015 Reading Challenge #16 A book from an author you love that you haven’t read yet I recommend this thriller to anyone who already likes the author It has a very fast pace plot good characters and interesting villain But it’s not the best thing Katzenbach has written So if you’re new with the author I suggest try another
